Summer Learning Journey : Week One : Hitting A High Note

In the past, Māori would often use song as a way of sharing information or communicating emotions. A waiata is the name given to a traditional Māori song.


 Fact #1 - Oriori: Oriori Is a Lullaby used for the dual purpose of lulling a child to sleep and imparting knowledge. Basically making the child fall to sleep with a song

Fact #2 - There  Other types of songs with chant-like melodies but vary in both purpose and content . They are Oriori , Pao , Apakura, Tuki Waka , & Whakarara .

Pao : A derisive song and dance used for entertainment.

Apakura : A lament for the dead sung during mourning ceremonies.
Tuki Waka : A canoe song sung to give the time to the paddlers.

Whakarara pa: A watchman's song sung by the watch on duty in the pa at night to

give warning of danger.

    Do you have a favourite waiata? There are so many beautiful waiatas out there that it can be very hard to only pick one. But if you could let us know what your favourite one is, that would be great!
